Visa run from Dong Hoi to Cha Lo: the Quang Binh route

Dong Hoi is not Da Nang, and the advice written for Da Nang does not transfer cleanly. Your nearest international crossing is Cha Lo – Na Phào — 130 km via QL12A, roughly 2.5–3 hours of driving each way. That single fact changes which checkpoint you tick on your e-visa application, and ticking the wrong one is the mistake that wastes a whole trip.

The good news is that it is a genuine same-day trip. Pickup around 06:30, back in Dong Hoi by roughly 14:30, sleeping in your own bed.

Why Dong Hoi means Cha Lo, not Lao Bao

A visa run is a journey, not a visa type: you exit Vietnam and re-enter on a new, already-approved e-visa. Tourist e-visas generally cannot be extended from inside the country, so a fresh entry is the normal legal route to more time.

From Dong Hoi, Cha Lo in Quảng Trị is the crossing that makes sense — 130 km on QL12A, about 2.5–3 hours each way, facing Na Phào on the Laos side. Lao Bao gets all the search traffic because Da Nang is bigger, but sending you there from Dong Hoi would add hours to your day for no benefit.

One wrinkle worth naming: Dong Hoi was in Quảng Bình until Vietnam merged its provinces on 1 July 2025, and it is now administratively in Quảng Trị. Old guides, old signs and most search results still say Quảng Bình. Both names describe the same place, and your paperwork is unaffected.

Distances here are road distances, rounded honestly. Queues at Cha Lo, weather on QL12A and public holidays on either side move the timings more than the kilometres do.

Select Cha Lo on the e-visa — and check it twice

This is the part to get right, because it cannot be fixed later. When you apply at evisa.gov.vn the form asks for your intended entry checkpoint. If you are coming back through Cha Lo, you must select Cha Lo. A visa naming a different checkpoint will not admit you here, and the choice cannot be amended once the visa is issued.

Spell it the way the portal spells it. We keep the gate name in its Vietnamese form throughout this guide — Cha Lo — precisely because that is the string you are looking for in the dropdown, and a translated version of it will not be there.

Cha Lo is on the list of international checkpoints where foreigners may enter and exit on an e-visa. That list grew from 42 checkpoints to 83 under Resolution 389/NQ-CP of 2 December 2025, which is what made several of these regional routes practical in the first place.

Processing is officially quoted at three to five working days and takes longer around public holidays. Apply 7–10 days before your current visa expires so a typo or a rejection is recoverable. And do not travel until the new visa is approved — leaving without one is how people end up stuck on the Laos side.

Do you actually need a visa run?

Worth checking before you book anything. The answer depends on the visa you hold, not on how long you have been in Vietnam.

  • Tourist e-visa (marked DL): usually cannot be extended in-country. A new e-visa plus a border run is the standard route.
  • Business, work, investor or family visa: may qualify for an in-country extension with a lawful sponsor and complete paperwork. Ask before you book a trip.
  • Visa exemption: your allowance and re-entry conditions depend on nationality and can differ from visa rules. Check yours specifically.
  • Temporary residence card (TRC): no visa run needed while the card is valid.

What Laos asks for at Na Phào

You are only stepping across the line and turning around, but Laos still processes you as an arrival, so its own rules apply in full.

Whether the Laos e-visa is accepted at Na Phào is not something we will state as settled — acceptance differs between crossings and has changed more than once. Assume you may need a visa on arrival: carry cash in clean US dollar notes and a spare passport photo, and treat any e-visa you already hold as a bonus rather than a plan.

We check the current position with the crossing before each departure and tell you what to bring. If a guide anywhere states this confidently without naming a date, be sceptical.

Other gates within reach of Dong Hoi

Lao Bảo is the realistic fallback from Dong Hoi, and the full set within reach is Lao Bảo, La Lay. The usual reasons to switch are a long queue, a holiday closure on the far side, or roadworks on the direct route.

Switching gates is not a decision you can make on the day, though — your e-visa names one checkpoint and only that checkpoint will admit you. So if there is a reason to prefer an alternative, it has to be settled before you apply. That is exactly the kind of thing worth a message to us first.

On price: our published packages are built around the Da Nang – Hoi An – Hue corridor. Dong Hoi is a different distance on a different road, so the fare is quoted per trip rather than listed. Ask and you will get a number, not a range.

Whatever the transport costs, the government fees are separate and are the same wherever you leave from: the Vietnam e-visa itself, plus any Laos entry fee your nationality attracts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a visa run from Dong Hoi in one day?

Yes. Cha Lo is 130 km from Dong Hoi, about 2.5–3 hours each way. A 06:30 pickup normally has you back by around 14:30, formalities included.

Which checkpoint should I choose on my e-visa from Dong Hoi?

Cha Lo. Select it by that name on evisa.gov.vn, and check the approved visa before you travel — the checkpoint cannot be changed after issue, and a visa naming a different gate will not get you back in here.

Do I need a Laos visa as well?

Possibly, depending on your nationality. We do not assume the Laos e-visa works at Na Phào, so plan for a visa on arrival — cash and a photo — and we will confirm the current position before you go.

I am in Quảng Bình, not Dong Hoi itself — can you still pick me up?

Usually yes. Dong Hoi is the pickup point we schedule around, but anywhere on the route through Quảng Bình and Quảng Trị is generally workable — it shifts your pickup time rather than the trip. Tell us the address and we will tell you the time.
