Vietnam visa extension or visa run: which one applies to you
You will find two contradictory claims online: “tourist visas can be extended inside Vietnam” and “you must leave the country”. Both are partly true, depending on what you hold. This guide helps you work out which situation is yours before you pay anyone.
Sort yourself by visa symbol
The symbol printed on your visa or entry stamp is the thing that matters. It records why you were admitted, and that purpose drives whether an extension is possible.
| Visa type | Extendable in-country | Usual route |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist e-visa (DL) | Usually not | New e-visa, then a Lao Bao border run |
| Business visa (DN) | Possible with a sponsor | Work through your sponsoring entity in Vietnam |
| Work visa (LD) | Possible, tied to the work permit | Extend alongside the employment file |
| Family visit visa (TT) | Possible with relationship documents | Extend on the family basis |
| Visa exemption | Not applicable | Exit and re-enter under the exemption conditions |
This table is general orientation, not legal advice for your case. Rules and local practice can change.
Why tourist e-visas usually cannot be extended
An e-visa is issued for a defined purpose and period, processed entirely online. On the tourist track, the way to get more time is to begin a new entry on a new e-visa rather than to stretch the old one.
That sounds inconvenient, but it has an upside: the process is clear, it is done online, and you do not depend on any sponsor to do it.
When to ask questions instead of booking a run
In those four cases a visa run may be money you did not need to spend, or worse, a complication in a file already moving. Describe your situation before you book.
- You work for a company in Vietnam that could sponsor a change of status.
- Your spouse or child is Vietnamese — a family-basis route may exist.
- You have a work permit or TRC application in progress; a badly timed border run can disrupt it.
- Your passport has under six months of validity — replace it before anything else.
Promises that should worry you
- “In-country tourist e-visa extension, no border trip, 100% guaranteed.”
- “Guaranteed entry” — no provider has the authority to guarantee that.
- A single bundled price with no breakdown of government fees.
- A request to hold your original passport for days with no written receipt.
Frequently asked questions
Can my 90-day e-visa be extended inside Vietnam?
In most tourist cases, no. The usual route is a new approved e-visa, then exit and re-enter at the checkpoint named on the new visa.
I hold a business visa — do I need a visa run?
Possibly not. Business visas can often be extended in-country with a lawful sponsor and complete documents. Check before booking a trip.
What if I have already overstayed?
Do not head to the border on your own. Overstays are handled case by case and need review before you travel.
