Lao Bao – Densavan crossing: the four steps, in order
Lao Bao is the international crossing on highway QL9 in Quang Tri province, facing Densavan in Savannakhet, Laos. For anyone based in Da Nang it is the practical exit-and-return point for a same-day visa run.
What confuses most first-timers is that you pass four checks, not two. Here is the real sequence, with the places that eat the most time.
Four checks, in this order
- Exit Vietnam: hand over your passport, receive the exit stamp. On paper, you are now outside Vietnam.
- Enter Laos: if your nationality needs a visa, this is where you obtain it at the checkpoint. It is the slowest step on a busy day.
- Exit Laos: turn around and process out. Usually quick.
- Re-enter Vietnam: present the printed new e-visa. The officer checks that the checkpoint on it matches Lao Bao.
Step four is where every earlier mistake surfaces. If your new e-visa names a different checkpoint, you cannot enter here.
Opening hours and when to arrive
The checkpoint keeps extended office hours, opening early morning and closing in the evening, with some counters pausing at lunch. Exact hours can change and the two sides sit in different time zones, so never plan to arrive near closing.
In practice, arriving around 10–11am works well. You miss the early freight rush, you keep slack for surprises, and you still get back to Da Nang the same evening.
Avoid if you can: major Vietnamese and Lao public holidays, long weekends, and the weeks around Tet. Traffic rises sharply and waits can multiply.
The Lao visa question — the most common trap
Plenty of travellers buy a Lao e-visa online, then discover at Densavan that it does not work. A Lao e-visa is not accepted at this crossing; if you need a visa, you get it at the checkpoint.
There are three possibilities depending on nationality: visa-exempt for a set number of days, visa obtainable at the checkpoint, or visa required in advance from a Lao mission. Work out which one you are before leaving Da Nang.
- Bring cash for Lao fees if you need a visa on arrival.
- Carry one passport photo — forms often need one attached.
- Keep your passport somewhere easy to reach: it comes out four times within about an hour.
Small things that make the day easier
- Wear long trousers and a sleeved shirt; the processing area expects modest dress.
- Do not photograph the control area, selfies included.
- Never carry items or documents across for a stranger, not even an envelope.
- Have your Da Nang address written down for the entry form.
- Bring water and a snack — options at the crossing are thin.
